How to get downloads as jar files

A “.jar” file is a “java archive” -- a file which bundles all the different .java files (and any other files) in a directory into a single file. It is a popular way to distribute Java programs which consist of many files. It also is a way to bundle together all the files of one BlueJ project.

If you want to download a .jar file and open it from BlueJ, you have to

• From a web browser, right-click on the file;
• when prompted, save the file to the disk. (Do not tell the browser to open the file; that won't work.)
• Either:
  • Go to BlueJ, and select Project > Open non-BlueJ… and select the not-already-extracted file,
  or
  • first extract the file into a folder (perhaps by right-clicking on its icon in windows, and choosing “Extract into some-folder/”),
    and then open it like any other BlueJ project (e.g.Project > Open Project...).
